I get asked about supplements constantly: what to take, how much, which brands are good. But increasingly, the question I'm getting is: "Can I just get it on Amazon?"
I know that Amazon is convenient, fast, and you can find basically anything. However, when it comes to supplements or things you'd ingest in general, I genuinely think it's worth being more careful about where you're buying from. Here's why:
Counterfeit products
Counterfeit supplements on Amazon are a legitimate issue. Even products with hundreds of five-star reviews can turn out to be fake. Reviews can be bought, manipulated, or just plain fabricated.
Counterfeiters are pretty sophisticated now and they'll copy the packaging, the labels, the lot and it looks completely legitimate. The problem is what's actually inside the bottle. Sometimes it's just ineffective (you're basically taking expensive placebo pills). Sometimes it contains different ingredients than what's listed. And occasionally, it can actually contain harmful substances. When you're taking something every day that's supposed to support your health, "might be fake" isn't really a risk worth taking.
Expiry dates
Amazon's marketplace is flooded with third-party sellers, and not all of them are particularly scrupulous about what they're shifting. I've heard from too many cases of people who've received supplements that are either expired or suspiciously close to their expiry date.
Supplements lose potency over time. That vitamin D you think you're taking that has probably been sitting in someone's warehouse for two years past its date, is probably not doing much for you. Some sellers prioritise shifting old stock over actually providing products that work, and Amazon's system doesn't always catch this.
Warehouse conditions
Supplements aren't like books or electronics, they're sensitive to their environment. Heat, humidity, light, all of these can degrade the active ingredients and make your supplements less effective or even unstable.
Amazon's warehouses are massive operations storing everything from nappies to garden furniture. They're not climate-controlled facilities designed for storing delicate nutritional products. Your probiotics might have spent weeks in a hot warehouse before arriving at your door, by which point the live bacteria are basically dead.
Proper supplement companies store their products carefully and ship them in appropriate conditions. Amazon's system just isn't set up for this level of care.
Third-Party Testing
This is the big one for me. Reputable supplement brands pay for independent third-party testing to verify that what's on the label is actually in the bottle, in the right amounts, and without contaminants. These test results are usually available on the company's website.
Amazon doesn't require sellers to provide any of this. You're essentially taking their word for it that the product contains what it claims to contain. And given the counterfeit issue we've already discussed, that's not a gamble I'd recommend.
So Where Should You Buy Supplements?
Buy directly from the manufacturer's website when possible. This guarantees you're getting the genuine product, properly stored, and not expired.
Alternatively, buy from specialist health shops (online or physical) that carefully vet their suppliers and store products properly. These retailers have reputations to protect and tend to be much more careful about what they stock.
Yes, it might take an extra day or two to arrive. Yes, you might have to actually think about where to buy rather than just defaulting to Amazon. But when it comes to something you're putting in your body every single day, that bit of extra effort is worth it.
